A Statement from the Department of Asian Studies 2016

December 6, 2016

We, the faculty in the Department of Asian Studies, wish to express our unwavering commitment to a safe, unbiased, and inclusive environment for our students, faculty, and staff.  We continue to denounce, in the strongest of terms, any climate that appeals to racism, misogyny, Islamophobia, homophobia, xenophobia, or threats of violence against persons with differing views, and the mocking of persons living with disabilities. Faculty in our department provide offerings and are engaged in research in the areas of language, religion, literature, and cultural studies of the cultures in east, south, and southeast Asia.  As a group, faculty in our department take language very seriously; how it is employed when talking about people and their cultures and religions has implications for our entire enterprise of higher education. The diversity of the cultures we represent on our campus and the ethnicities and political, theoretical, and gender orientations of our faculty, staff, and students is a great source of pride for our university.  With this statement, we reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding this cherished diversity,  striving to prevent any threats to our social fabric, and continuing our work of fostering understanding, critical inquiry, and appreciation of the vibrant cultures we study.
