Asian 2263
Three credit course, June 22 - July 31, 2020
Offered in a distance learning format.
Course Description
This interdisciplinary course compares Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with a verse novel from Cambodia, Tum Teav, which has many similarities with Shakespeare's play. In each text the female protagonist is forced by her parents to marry someone against her will. As we analyze each text individually and comparatively, we suggest interpretations of the texts based on cultural systems and contexts that produce multiple possible meanings that can be ambiguous or in conflict with each other.
The course is taught by Dr. George V. Chigas (M.A. from Cornell University, Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London). Dr. Chigas currently is an Associate Teaching Professor in Cambodian Language and Culture in the Department of World Languages and Culturesat the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and was previously the Associate Director of the Cambodian Genocide Program at Yale University.
